The other factor that can affect wave height is shallow water. This effect can often be found in depths that are considerably greater than that required for safe navigation. A wave will start to ‘feel’ the bottom in depths that can be two or three times the wave height and there are suggestions that big ocean swells can be affected in water depths exceeding 100m (320ft). This ‘feeling’ of the sea bottom will slow the wave down, rather like the effect of an adverse tide, and in turn the wavelength will be shortened and its height increased.
